The French word for bodybuilding is 'culturisme', perhaps a nod back to the term 'Physical Culture' that was popular in the '50s. The term is apt in that serious bodybuilding and other forms of extreme physical development do inhabit a 'culture'. Brian Moss captures this culture extremely well through his beautiful photography. His images take us beyond the physical and give us insights into the characters of the remarkable people he photographs. Moss's eye is sensitive but sharp. Fundamentally he's a gifted portrait photographer, so its no wonder that his work is full of integrity, honesty, humour, pain, strength and wonder. Be it a bodybuilder or a man covered in tattoos, Moss's work gives us insight and appreciation while treating those he photographs with dignity and respect.
