Wei's work covers a range of subjects including self-portraiture, vernacular and city-scape work. His portrait (both of himself and of his models) work explores vulnerability and individuality. Most of his models are either nude or nearly nude. He uses the settings for his portraits to enhance the characterisations of his subjects. It's great to see this sort of work from a Chinese artist and seeing the world from the perspective of a chinese artist who's work seems to be completely out of tune with what one my expect, though his work goes well beyond any categorisation of that kind. Challenging and beautiful and fascinating.
